Halloween Tablecloths

Kitchen chemistry experiments Wizard you can share with their children

This article teaches kids about chemistry and is an excellent introduction to the outrageously funny in chemistry education at home (including exothermic reactions, the phase changes, and indicators acid). It is also good for boy scouts working on a plate, or for any child that love science experiments. These experiments are part of a school science at home that I teach, and I promise that your kids will love.

Chemistry is a fascinating subject for children of any age, especially if you set an environment of natural discovery for them to explore safely in. We'll see how to do this with their own homeschool science learning environment.

At a university, one of the first things you learn in chemistry class is the difference between the physical and chemical changes. An example of a physical change that occurs when you change the shape of an object, like wadding a piece of paper. If the light the paper wad on fire, you now have a chemical change. You are rearranging the atoms that used to be the molecules that make the paper into other molecules, such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, ash, etc.

How you can tell the difference between chemical and physical changes? There is an easy way to tell if you have a chemical change: if something changes color, it emits light (as light sticks used around Halloween) heat is absorbed (gets cold) or produces heat (heats). Examples rapid physical changes include tearing cloth, the moving mass, stretching bands rubber, eating a banana, or blowing bubbles.

Shopping List:

§ Rubbing alcohol (Large bottle)

§ Hydrogen peroxide (the bigger bottle)

§ Baking soda (larger box that is)

§ distilled white vinegar (large size)

§ washing soda (about laundry soap)

§ Citric acid (Optional, but nice to have)

§ A head of red cabbage

§ light ivory soap (small bottle)

§ Alum (see the spice section)

§ Single use cold pack (not gel)

§ Plastic bags with zip and old water bottles

§ Muffin cup baking tray (12 cups or more)

Let up to mix chemicals that bubble, ooze, freeze, and change the colors. Before you begin, you need to get these items together: a cup muffin baking tray, water, vinegar (acetic acid), baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), soda (sodium carbonate), alcohol, water peroxide, citric acid, ammonium chloride (not activate the cold pack, but once cut open and empty its contents into a plastic bag and discard the bag of water inside), aluminum sulfate ("alum" in the spice section of the store or pharmacy), a head of cabbage and a clear soap liquid dish as ivory.

Cover your kitchen table with a plastic tablecloth (if you have young children, put another tablecloth on the floor to catch spills.) Place chemicals in the table. A set of molds, which provide excellent chemistry experiment laboratory. (Alternatively, you can use empty plastic trays ice cube.) You are blended into these cups. Leave enough space in the cups of their products chemicals to mix and bubble up - do not fill all the way to do your experiments!

Set out your liquid chemicals in easy pour containers, such as water bottles (be sure to label, since all will look the same): alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, water, acid acetic and dish soap (mixed with water). Place small bowls (Or zipper bags if you're doing this with a crowd) of the powders with "scoops" made from the tops of their bottles of water. The small "scoops" to regulate the amounts you need for a reaction roll size. Label the powders, since they all look the same.

Although these chemicals are not harmful to the skin may cause your skin to dry and itchy. Wear gloves (latex or similar) and eye protection (safety glasses), and if you are unsure about an experiment or chemical but do not. (Skip the peroxide and cold pack if you have young children.)

What about red cabbage? Col juice Red has anthocyanin, which makes it an excellent indicator for these experiments. Anthocyanin is what gives the leaves, stems, fruits and flowers their colors. Did you know that certain flowers as hydrangeas blue in acidic soil and turn pink when transplanted to a very basic? This next step of the experiment will help you understand why. You will need to get the anthocyanin of cabbage and in a more useful, like a liquid "indicator."

Prepare the prompt thick cut the head of red cabbage and boiling the pieces for five minutes on the stove in a pot full of water. Carefully strain out all pieces (use a fine mesh strainer) and the reserved liquid is the indicator (must purple).

By adding this indicator to different substances, you will see a range of colors: hot pink, tangerine orange, sun yellow, emerald green, ocean blue, velvet purple, and everyone else. Test Indicator adding drops of cabbage juice to something acidic, like lemon juice and see how different the color is when you add the indicator to a base, sodium bicarbonate mixed with water.

Have your indicator in a bottle by itself. Old sauce bottles of soy or other bottles with a device integrated regulation that maintains a system of drip pouring perfect. You can also use a bowl with a bulb syringe, but cross-contamination is a problem. Or not - depending if you want children to see the effects of cross-contamination during their experiments. (The bowl indicator continuously change color throughout the experiment.)

Their mission: find the reactions that generate more heat (exothermic), absorb more heat (endothermic), which are the most impressive in their reaction (the factor ohhhh, ahhhhh).

The Experiment: Start mixing it up! When I personally teach this class, we will take them into all the chemicals at once (though the indicator) and, of course, this leads to a chaotic mix of everything. When chaos is installed below, and begin to ask good questions, revealed a second batch of chemicals that can be used. (I have two identical sets of chemicals, knowing that the first set will get used very quickly.)

Suggested test the chemical reactions: Periodically hold your hand under the muffin cups to test the temperature.

After the initial burst of enthusiasm, students of science homschool inherently begin to ask better questions. They want to know why the green slime is being dragged on the floor, while someone else just bubbled up hot pink, apparently several of the same material. Give them the change to figure out a systematic approach more, and ask for help before jumping in to assist.

Homeschool Science Teaching Tips: You can make this lab more advanced by adding a scale of shipping costs (to measure the solids in the exact dimensions) small vessels and pipettes for measurements of liquids, and data sheets to record temperature, reactivity, and acid / level indicator base. Tip - do data sheet as a matrix to ensure you receive all possible combinations.

Use the indicator before and after mixing products chemicals, and was surprised and dazzled by the results!
